Blunders… Nothing more than blunders

ICC has been renamed by many cricket analysts as Indian Cricket Council instead of International Cricket Council, because of their such series of blunders

I am not here to degrade Indian legend by showing such stats but I feel being a sports loving person, it’d be on equality. Honestly if these stats were vice versa i.e. Kapil Dev having stats of Imran Khan and Imran Khan having stats of Kapil Dev, I’d had taken it as this is what sports is all about, means showing sportsmen spirit. But right now when ICC (should I call it International Cricket Council or Indian Cricket Council????), announced the list of all time eleven on the eve of the 2000th test match of international cricket, they made some great blunders, like one I just mentioned above. No doubt Dev has been a great skipper and led his team to famous victory at the 1983 Cricket World Cup, but ignoring these criteria’s while announcing an all time 11 that too when international/global cricket is celebrating 2000th test, ignoring not only Imran Khan but also Gary Sobers, Vivian Richards, Richard Headley etc, than personally I think there’s some mistake in it, ok the team must have to be limited to 11 players but you can’t ignore players like I mentioned up above and also Courtney Walsh and Curtly Ambrose! Plus how can we ignore Great Hanif Muhammad, who was given the title of little master by the Queen Elizabeth herself, plus Javed Miandad (know many will crack jokes on him), but the kind of ton innings he played in tough situations, were all match winning scores. So I must say ICC showed biased ness.

Why am I saying like that?

Economically I must admit Kapil Dev is way too much better than Imran Khan in any format of the game, but apart from Economy rate, Strike rates and Averages are also given importance. Mind you both of them were bowling all-rounders means their major was bowling, rest the readers are quite capable of understanding who’s better!

Peace!

ICC and Pakistan

Harper did the right thing raising voice against this thing, no one is above the law, the way Indian skipper criticized.

Atlast someone dared to say something openly and bluntly that he’s against rationality in the game of cricket, just like Australian Darrel Harper mentioned in his latest radio interview.

It must be noticed that its against the integrity of umpires and officials that players pointing fingers on the integrity of those who manage a particular game, but the way umpires and officials were criticized by Indian skipper. Anyways don’t wanna say rough about it because its a natural thing but on the contrary it must be noticed that a game should be played with its full spirit.

Anyways, coming back to Pakistan, because of criticism of Pakistan Cricket Board on Pakistan Task Team findings, now members of Pakistan Task Team are expected to visit Pakistan soon, to have a look into ground realties for which Pakistan Cricket Board heavily criticized ICC-PTT on. But I personally feel that the findings of ICC-PTT was well managed because before 1999, Pakistan Cricket Board was run under Governor Bodies, and they used to conduct elections and elect chairman of the cricket board, it was after 1999 that ad-hoc was implemented where chairman of the cricket board was selected by Patron-in-Chief which is usually President of the Country, and the whole problem starts from there.

Why am I saying like that?

I am saying this because of following reasons:

President of the country doesn’t have time to look into the matters of cricketing affairs, and whatever is presented in front of him, he’s to believe them, because its his own appointed personnel. Limiting the power of many people into one single personnel, means there would be a series of blunders, as the chairman would try to poke into other matters like selection of the team and other matters, plus he’ll try to have all powers under him including governor board’s meetings and etc. As there wont be scrutiny or audit of what he does, he’d definitely try to bring his own people into helm of affairs of the board so that there would be anyone who’d be pointing fingers on him. He’d definitely not like a scenario where there would be chance of elections.

What were the main points, PCB raised fingers on ICC-PTT findings?

They wobble that:

  • The Fact-Finding report was made on the opinion of one person (Ramiz Raja, who was the only Pakistan in that lot which prepared this report)
  • This fact finding report was void of ground realties, which prevails in Pakistan.
  • Interaction with Government is necessary when it comes to settling of security and other similar matters.
PCB itself requested ICC for preparing of such report, but there should have been clear guideline, instead of giving privilege

What I say?

I say that these people are living in la la land! First of all, tell me one thing. before 1999 when PCB was run like a joint stock company, which was mentioned in the panels of Security Exchange Commission of Pakistan, also known as SECP, even than teams used to visit Pakistan and play good cricket as well, ok admit it that since September 11, 2001 times have changed but still so much influence of Government ain’t good for the game itself. I don’t know what other reasons are there other than easiness of having corruption in the board. They have literally bankrupt that Hen which used to lay golden eggs because of their spend-theft activities.

By spend-theft, I mean those expenditures which includes unnecessary traveling of our beloved chairman of cricket board whenever and wherever the team is touring to, since its obligatory for Pakistan Cricket Team to play their home and away games on the foreign shores, so its like Eid for the management of Pakistan Cricket Board to enjoy the freedom of traveling world-wide, who can resist to such privileges.

So I am definitely in favour of what ICC recommended but on the same, I do oppose their unnecessary poking, and on this I am in favour of PCB because its none of ICC’s matter as although there are some flaws in the PCB but still Pakistan Cricket Board is Incharge of domestic matters and ICC don’t have any obligation to impose whatsoever grounds, Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka also have the same issues i.e. Governmental influences etc but ICC never dare to poke there and impose its authority, it can give suggestions and guidelines but implementing them in on the hands of PCB or the home country cricket board.

Don’t wanna be rational that’s why not saying that because Sharad Pawar is the President of ICC, that’s why this and that is happening, we must admit that India has created its lobbying power to an extend where Pakistan will need some time to reach.

Post Script

By the time I am writing this, India is about to play England in the 2000th test match of cricketing world and still Mr. Butt is on his way to the London to experience that special test match plus have “informal talks” with ICC and ICC-PTT members. I just wanna conclude that they should keep their media cell active so that hoax like such shouldn’t get space on national and international media, in a TV show when CEO of PCB Subhan Ahmed came, and clarified many rumours that they have not rejected but showed some reservations regarding SOME points of their fact-finding reports so one can’t say we’ve rejected them. I just say when such step was taken before such things erupted, couldn’t that been much better? A good manager is a person who senses such things before they occur.

Peace!

Quarter half of CWC 2011

By the time I am writing this, Pakistan have won
and made their mark into the semis where they
are expected to meet India or Australia
By the time I’m writing this, Pakistan just managed to storm into the Semis of a 50-over ICC Event since 1999. Many people are praising Pakistan for their effort and no doubt its a great achievement but fielding lapses and not finishing the game early.

Even in the Aussie group game, I felt they gave 20 extra runs in the end, and while reviewing the score-cards, Pakistan lost its 1979 world cup game against the same opposition, they lost the match by one wicket, because they instead of taking care of leaking of runs, they only emphasized on taking wickets to be a hero. I don’t wanna mention that particular team or the captain but against their game against the Proteas I second their skipper that when you wear national team’s jersey, you play for national team instead of yourself while slogging in the batting power-play span.

Same goes for Pakistan, they had the chance to limited the Windies under triple figure mark, but they leaked some extra runs while everyone wanting to take wicket instead of working n leakage of runs. Against relatively easier team like the West Indies, they managed to win but against the big teams like India/Australia  or South Africa/New Zealand, whoever Pakistan is going to play now in future, will not gave such chance of recovery. Specially when Proteas who’re having a great run in this CWC, might able to get rid of their “Chokers” tag.

Lets see what happens in these remaining 3 days of knockout stages. My best wishes with Pakistan but being a sports loving person, I also wish may the best team wins this tournament.

Just before the new years…

Jonathan Trott made the situation easy for England
to win their first Ashes in Australia in a long time

This boxing day has been quite a busy one for cricket fans. 4 of 6 of top cricket giants are currently engaged with each others, with England taking on Australia to defend their Ashes glory which they got during the last year’s triumph at their own backyard, plus they want to prove the world that they aren’t only the lions at their home but away too, especially in Australia where their track-record ain’t upto that standard, so they’ve to settle many scores on their 2010-11 Ashes tour to down-under. Already the current Ashes series 2010-11 has been a topsy-turvy series when the pendulum shifted or should I say fluctuated quickly into one’s favour. It started at Gabba, Brisbane, with Siddle’s hat-trick and still England managed to save the game, and in the Second Test played at Adelaide Oval, Adelaide, England won by an innings and 71 runs, with Cook scoring 148 and Pietersen scoring a mammoth 227 and well supported by Trott, Bell and Collingwood scoring 78, 68 and 42 respectively, and the third test match played at WACA Perth, Australia managed to settle their scores from the previous test match and thanks to the cameocre innings of Mike Hussey and the later middle order, Australia managed to score such total which could be defended by their bowlers, and that’s what happened, Australia won that test match by 267 runs, but when the test match came to MCG, Melbourne for the box-in day test match, the balance again shifted to England’s half, first a great recovery from English bowlers by restricting Aussies inside the three figure mark, and in reply batsmen also replied by scoring 445-5 at stumps on day two, and so England are on the verge of winning this test match and the series aswell. The Melbourne Ashes test is also famous for Ponting outburst when a decision went against his team, on the field umpire Mr. Aleem Dar, and that too went on when the third umpire seconded Dar’s decision of giving Pietersen not out, he sledged both the umpires and Pietersen, which I personally thought was a tactic to displace attention, and that happened for sure when after sometime, Pietersen was adjudged LBW. Boy!!! Too much drama…

Tim Southee and the Kiwi bowlers would be on high
after a comprehensive victory against Pakistan
in Auckland and would like to clinch the series

Apart from them, Pakistanis are also playing their away series across the Tasmanian seas (its very important to mention home and away matches when it involves Pakistan, although Pakistan is hosting their home and away both games away from home) and already they lost their opening match of a 3 match T20 series against the hosts, beating comprehensively with balls to spare, but little bit of optimism when it comes to know that 2 more matches to go for Pakistan, but sad to know that Pakistan’s recent T20 playing form has been too poor to mention, specially when it comes to last 5 matches, L.L.L.L.L. – when the last 2 L’s are against the English team where they lost both of their games and after that they also lost their home T20 games (played away ofcourse) in Abu Dhabi against the Proteas, by a clean sweep again and the same legacy continued when Pakistan came to NZ. I am not optimistic with tomorrow’s match result in favour of Pakistan as when the Cricket World Cup is just round the corner in less than 2 months time, still we’re not confirm of the team combinations and still playing a musical chair game when it comes to the selection of players, and in such an important series when its the penultimate series before the ICC Cricket World Cup, we’re still not sure who to select and who not, as in such an important series we’re playing with a makeshift wicket keeper and that too without a proper backup. Lets suppose if anything happens to Umar Akmal, than by whom are we going to depend for keeping the wickets? We ain’t think like that when selecting a team, a National Team, all the team members which actually represent the Country and the Nation, we select such a pathetic team without any backup… Why don’t they go for talent hunt sorta thing, talent scattered across Pakistan (not me ofcourse, I am more into sitting hours either studying or blogging), why don’t they go for search for them, instead of getting blackmailed by these good-for-nothing-so-called-seniors who had done nothing except for deteriorating the stature of Pakistan, Pakistan Cricket and Pakistani Nation, still this nation loves them so much they yell for them, do these people have the right to play with the sentiments of such an emotional nation when it comes to cricket? If I were the head on them, I’d have hanged them till death, so that no one in future tried the same as they had an example already.

India managed to restrict the Proteas to 131 and
currently it seems India are in complete command

Another exciting test match going on in the Land of Rainbow Nation, where India – currently the number one team in ICC Test Cricket rating, taking on the number two test side South Africa, so in short a severe battle for having the number one spot between both teams, one want to grab it and another wants to retain it till Cricket World Cup. Although when Proteas were preparing for India series, they were underestimated because of the recently concluded drawn series against Pakistan in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, but they replied well by beating India comprehensively by innings margin. But India replied well in the Durban test, although not scored upto the mark but with the inclusion of Zaheer Khan, their bowling has been strengthen and now they’re looking in a position to ask questions and settle their own scores against the Proteas, who look in a spot of bother in the first innings where they lost majority of their wickets under the deficit, although they’ve avoided the follow-on but last time when I saw the scores still 90 odd runs required to overcome the deficit, and to impose a total for India to bat on but I don’t think they’ll be able to impose a total, as they were left with tail-enders. Still I think the third day would be the climax day of the test match where anyone can be able to predict where this test match is going on, on a draw, or anyone team winning the match as whenever England, Australia or South Africa playing, you can’t predict who’s the winner as they fight until the last ball is bowled, secondly they’ve test matches a tradition so you can’t compare them with Pakistan, as being a Pakistani I am saddened by the fact that Sri Lanka and India have improved their gaming standards well above Pakistan, and I fear if things going on the same way, Bangladesh might also overcome Pakistan in coming future, as already I am sniffing some resistance from the Afghanistan side, who’ve their moral up against the Pakistanis as they’ve beaten Pakistan comprehensively in the semis in recently concluded Asian Games Cricket Event in China.

Me being an ample cricket follower, this week has been my favourite as from the day start to end there’s cricket and each one trying to take excitement to the next level, and those who say that test matches have died, they should watch the innings of SRT, or the Ashes which is filled with perfect excitement for the new years joy.

India v Australia Series 2010

Difference a captaincy can make to a team!

An skipper can make or break a player’s career. Take Inzamam played with Asim Kamal’s career or, vice versa take Younis Khan who re-energized Afridi during the ICC World T20 2009 in the UK when he was about to be kicked out of the Pakistani team because of his poor batting form, but everyone saw the Number 10 shirt wearer in the Pakistani team was the Man of the Tournament during that tournament, and still Afridi took the confidence from that tournament to his captaincy during the One All T20 match against the Lankans in their own backyard and than the two T20s against the Kiwis in the UAE which also favoured the Pakistanis.

It was all because of the wise judgment of a fighter skipper we had during those days and which was revitalizing the whole Pakistani unit. In whatever and whichever the sport, skipper have to lead from the front. Recently during the second ODI between England and Pakistan at Headingley, Leeds, Andrew Strauss laid the foundation for the later batsmen to score and played his major role in winning of the second ODI, but I must say Strauss may be a great batsman but he lacks sportsman spirit for sure! Those who’ve been following the nPower Test series between England and Pakistan and specially the Oval Test, when Wahab Riaz had his first test wicket (citation, if require) on a clear edge to the keeper, he had the decision to be reviewed although on the naked eye it looked like a clear deflection off the bat, but still opt for reviewing the decision and the third umpire seconded the onfield umpire and gave Strauss out, me my self a later middle order batsman and I can be assured at times that ball has hit my bat or not.

I still remember the days when we used to play at UBL Sports Complex in Karachi, my coach used to tell us that we’ve to have our eyes and ears always open, eyes for watching the ball and ears for the edges off the bat. These are the basic thing which are taught when a baby starts to play hard ball cricket. But Strauss has been acting little bit more childish than that stage! Even during the 2nd ODI, he was found indicating the umpire with his negative nod to umpire when the whole Pakistani team appealed for clear caught behind! even the replays showed Pakistanis were unlucky…

Anyways getting back to the skippers, cricket is the only game in the world (again citation require, if any) in which the role of skipper is like a backbone to the team! He should be motivational, leading from the front, a team man and last but not the least the team should respect him, like Imran Khan! Why going too far, MS Dhoni when took the charge as the skipper of Indian National Cricket side, although there were players like Dravid, Tendulkar, Ganguly, Kumble and Sehwag who could have been skipping the side at first, but BCCI supported MSD and now with their consistency, India is ranked the world’s number one team!

Similarly, if we had persist with Younis Khan and didn’t got blackmailed by the players and the corrupt manager, who should start baby sitting his grandsons and granddaughters at home, things would have been much better for Pakistan as well! But when personal ego takes place, country’s interest comes second and that’s what the dilemma of Pakistani Cricket, if put in a nutshell!

Pak India Clash on 19th June

Well played Pakistan but it wasn’t your day

The iconic clash on 19th June 2010, in the Lankan city of Dambulla was a treat to watch for both Pakistani and Indian cricket fans and players, as it was an edge of the seat contest which although ended in favour of Indians but it also cemented a fact that importance of ODI’s have not dimmed (although I might sound like Ricky Ponting or ICC CEO and their other managers 😉).

At first the way Pakistanis played, I personally was disappointed with their efforts at the depth of the inning where they had to accelerate, and its my personal opinion that players like Younus Khan and Mohammad Yousuf could have steadied the ship in order to touch the magical 300 mark, which they didn’t and was admitted even by Shahid Afridi in his post match press conference. It would be unfair just to criticize Pakistan for bad fielding as during Indian fielding, Indians too dropped catches and miss-fielded, but yeah they managed to reduce Pakistan to a par score which India’s batting power could easily manage to chase under-lights.

But it is justified to criticize on the decision making and field setting according to situation, for instance they way Shoaib Akhtar was bowling today against the Bangladeshis, if he could had bowled with the same zeal and enthusiasm against the Indians and specially to so called Indian Hero Harbhajan Singh aka Bhajji, i.e. bowling in-swinging yorkers instead of short pitch and short of the length (not SoAL blog guys =P) deliveries, things would have been difficult for Bhajji to score that much, although must give credit to Bhajji for keeping his cools and showed courage, but it could have avoided.

So its literally unfair and useless to criticize Pakistani players for losing the match on small points, Pakistan did fought and even in the Indian Dressing Room, till Bhajji didn’t hit the penultimate sixer, they were tensed. For Pakistan it was more like the same what happened in the Wedding City i.e. St. Lucia where Pakistanis were stunned with the heroics of Mike Hussey last over spanking to Saeed Ajmal and this time it was Mohammad Aamer, the legacy continued.

Any how, now the 19th of June 2010 has gone and Pakistan and Bangladesh are the two countries who’d be boarding their tickets for the UK, as India and Sri Lanka would be competing with each other in the finals (may the best team win), Bangladesh to complete their later leg of bilateral ODI series with England and Pakistan to compete against the Aussies in their home-series following bilateral series against the English in difficult conditions in English summer where Pakistanis would complete their English summer.

Pakistan on India Asia Cup clash

It’ll be a tough match barring friendships between the players of both teams

Its the most awaited match of the tournament, and even Nimbus would be expecting high profits and TV ratings from this match as this is the match between two arch rivals Pakistan and India. Off the ground they’re good friends (as the image shows) but on the field they can be fiercest of rivals, even more than Aussie-English rivalry.

Last time when these two sides clashed with each other, Pakistan had won in the Champions Trophy 2009 group match in Centurion, South Africa and now things have changed for Pakistan as in that team we had support of Muhammad Yousuf and Younus Khan who contributed in whatsoever circumstances and after that Pakistan had its bad times started when they started the series against the Kiwis in the UAE, because a turmoil sorta situation was starting to stitch by some of the players which completed in Aussies tour, resulting in which we lost players like MoYo and Younus in return.

Many say both teams are evenly poised with India weaker on bowling and fielding and Pakistan on batting and fielding but my personal gutsy feeling that India would have an upper hand as they have the tendency to stay on the wicket, finding it sans in Pak players, plus the humidity suits more to the Indians than Pakistanis.

Still wish Pakistan wins the match with flying colours.

Match almost won

Well played Afridi

Don’t wanna say that team didn’t play well, but it was without planning of any sort. The stage where Afridi left Pakistan could have easily won that match, but as the legacy going on with Pakistani players, of not capitalizing on the advantage in later part of the inning. Similar was the case here when Required rate was under 6 so it was just the case of taking single doubles with Razzaq at one end, was an easy job. No doubt Lankan kept their cools but it was more of Pakistan loosing the match.

Now matches further in the tournament are tough but must win for Pakistan to proceed into the finals of the Asia cup which Pakistan only won once, in 2000 in Bangladesh. Pakistan can do it but very difficult.

On the other hand, on paper team India looks stronger opponent with players like Sehwag, Gambhir, MSD, Raina in their lineup (thank god they didn’t included the wall known as Dravid 😉)

Lets hope after this performance what would be the conclusion of Pakistan-India ODI, which I am not very optimistic of, because already in the first match of a tournament, in disciplinary actions were shown by Pakistani players, clearly exposing the lack of management interest of those who’re on the job.

God saves us from such managers, who can’t control 15 players.

Skipper announced for Asia Cup and England Tour

Shahid Afridi has been announced as the skipper for Asia Cup and off-shore home-series in England against Aussies and England

Shahid Afridi has been announced as the skipper for upcoming Asia Cup to be played in Sri Lanka, featuring India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. After that they are gonna travel to England where they have to play against Aussies and later against England.

The importance of this series is that this is a full fledged home-series Pakistan has able to play against any opponent since the attack of Sri Lankan team convoy in Lahore on 3rd of March 2009. After that incident Pakistan played a ODI and one only T20 series against Aussies in Dubai and Abu Dhabi just before the 2009 edition of World T20 in England.

Another big news is that some of the seniors minus Mohammad Yousuf have been recalled in the 30 member probables, like Younis Khan, Shoaib Malik and Shoaib Akhtar to name some.

I personally feel the inclusion of Shoaib Akhtar would benefit Pakistani team as what I saw in the Pentangular ODI cup recently concluded just before the start of ICC World T20 2010, and he was impressive aswell. Shoaib last played an international for Pakistan in May 2009 and his last Test back in December 2007, but has this season turned out in domestic cricket in a bid to prove his fitness; he was particularly impressive in the Pentangular ODI cup in Karachi recently.

Again being personal, this time selectors did the right thing in dropping Misbah-ul-Haq, I’ve a great regards for him but his stay on the pitch isn’t benefiting Pakistan as much as he’s expected to. Plus he has been included in the team since Pakistan started their tour to New Zealand and than not to mention Aussie tour where he didn’t perform up-to-the-mark, and even in the World T20 2010, he wasn’t in his prime form like he was once in 2007 edition of World T20 in South Africa and later in tests in India, so I personally think it was time to give that space to someone more deserving.

Inclusion of Shahzaib Hassan is a good omen for the team, I personally think (maybe I am saying too much) that he’s a similar sorta player compared to Sanath Jayasuria, the way he played in RBS Pentangular ODI cup, he deserved a place in playing national team squad.

Kamran Akmal has been named with another keeper on his back Zulqarnain Haider, so that now Kamran Akmal has performance pressure on his shoulder, as during the New Years Sydney Test 2010, he dropped Mike Hussey 4 times in second innings of almost won test match and than fluffing a easy run-out, this sorta performance needed some check and balance and selection committee did the right thing by pressurizing him by placing a second wicket-keeper with him in the squad, the only edge which Kamran Akmal has on Haider is of batting, he’s a much better batsman than Zulqarnain Haider.

The only drawback in this squad I feel is of absence of Mohammad Yousuf whom Shahid Afridi told the media that he [Shahid Afridi] insisted Yousuf to withdraw his retirement decision but Afridi said Yousuf was unwilling to change his mind. He was the successful run-scorer for Pakistan in their last trip to England against the looks of Steve Harmisons, James Andersons etc and now in this trip Mohammad Yousuf’s absence would be greatly felt as I personally feel their isn’t any player of MoYo’s caliber in this currently announced squad.

Probables for Pakistani team:

Salman Butt, Imran Farhat, Yasir Hameed, Khurram Manzoor, Shahzaib Hassan, Azhar Ali, Azeem Ghumman, Younis Khan, Shoaib Malik, Umar Akmal, Faisal Iqbal, Fawad Alam, Hasan Raza, Asad Shafiq, Umar Amin, Aamer Sajjad, Mohammad Hafeez, Shahid Afridi (capt), Abdul Razzaq, Yasir Arafat, Umar Gul, Shoaib Akhtar, Mohammad Asif, Mohammad Aamer, Mohammad Sami, Wahab Riaz, Mohammad Irfan, Tanvir Ahmed, Aizaz Cheema, Danish Kaneria, Abdur Rehman, Saeed Ajmal, Zulfiqar Babar, Kamran Akmal (wk), Zulqarnain Haider (wk)
